AS testing new cart-based system for geophysics

Archaeological Solutions' Geophysics team are currently running tests on our new non-magnetic cart for magnetometry surveys.

The cart has been made by external consultant Dave Bescoby. It is designed to allow fast and accurate surveys over flat ground using a dual sensor Bartington Grad601 magnetic gradiometer. The frame is entirely non-magnetic so that it will not interfere with the highly sensitive instruments, being made from glass fibre and plastic, with brass and alloy fittings. The field computer (Trimble Geo7x) has a built in GNSS GPS receiver, allowing sub-meter 3D positioning. Readings from the GPS and gradiometer are combined using Geomar Trackmaker 601software in real time, allowing a survey to be conducted in transects over a large area.
